The event closed with the master class "Two hundred years of wine globalisation: a new comparative history" given by Professor Vicente Pinilla Navarro, Professor at the University of Zaragoza.
Vicente Pinilla Navarro, Professor of History and Economic Institutions at the University of Zaragoza, inaugurated the activities of the Pedro Vivanco Wine Culture Hall at the University of La Rioja.
Pinilla Navarro gave a lecture entitled "Two hundred years of the globalisation of wine: a new comparative history" in the Sala de Grados of the Edificio Quintiliano in Logroño, the result of the work of researchers from different countries. In his speech he started from the convergences in the figures between the world of Old and New World wine. This meant that the professor showed us figures, percentages, tables, graphs and a question in a half-hour master class that asked: Where do we go from here? The answers were as varied as the different problems and challenges faced by wineries in the current wine market: "The convergence between, and within, the Old and New World will continue: a strong impact of the Asian market is expected. Taxes/restrictions on international trade will continue to decrease, but excise taxes may increase. Deregulation of the laws on the retail sale of alcoholic beverages will continue to spread. New technologies will continue to reduce the cost of upgrading non premium and commercial wines to higher quality products. Bulk shipping technologies ensure that most of the wines traded internationally will be in bulk. Demand will expand more rapidly for super premium wines. Viticulture in countries with cool climates will expand in response to global warming and increased demand for fine and sparkling wines.
This was the end, followed by a tasting of the Vivanco family's wines, in an event that had begun an hour and a quarter earlier with the words of Javier García Turza, secretary general of the University of La Rioja, and the stories of Santiago and Rafa Vivanco, who spoke about their father Pedro Vivanco, full of memories, anecdotes and emotion, a lot of emotion before a large number of friends who had gathered at the Quintiliano building of the University of La Rioja, and their most direct relatives. Not for nothing does the Aula Pedro Vivanco Wine Culture at the University of La Rioja pay tribute to the figure of the winemaker Pedro Vivanco Paracuellos (Logroño, 1946-2016).
Emilio Barco, responsible for the Pedro Vivanco Wine Culture Classroom, developed the principles of this cultural project. As a first objective, he indicated "to cover little but to squeeze a lot, that is to say, to take out all the must" to each topic, while leaving the classrooms whenever possible to look for alliances around this Classroom. Together with this, there is the purpose of "weaving together in the most solid way the relationship of the Vivanco family with the University".
He opted for training with a triple objective: to offer general basic training aimed at the general public; transversal training on specific issues of the sector, aimed at researchers or professionals in the sector; and to disseminate the results of research projects, although he indicated that the subject of the research, in principle, was left until 2019, "to seek something new, something different".
Finally, he gave a breakdown of the next activities that will be presented under the Aula Pedro Vivanco Wine Culture label, which are the following: a travelling photographic exhibition on Viticulture, in collaboration with the Institute of Riojan Studies, and the aim of disseminating the López Osés archive related to wine culture, landscapes and work, mainly. The exhibition of 30 images will leave from the Vivanco Museum, with the intention of visiting several municipalities.
In April, the towns of Arnedo, Calahorra, Haro and Logroño will receive a series of lectures on "Experiences in wine culture", as well as a training course at the University of Experience entitled "Culture of wine".
In May, on the 3rd and 4th, they will organise the 1st National Conference on Historic Winery Neighbourhoods, in collaboration with the San Asensio Town Council and Bodegas Lecea. The aim is to raise the awareness of citizens in general and of municipal and regional authorities in particular on the need to preserve and protect the heritage of historic winery districts.
In July, from the 3rd to the 6th, a summer course on wine tourism to answer the three questions that will be posed: wine tourism with what, wine tourism for what and wine tourism for whom... in an activity, already unhurried but without pauses, which continues until the winter of this year.
