Antonio López Osés

Antonio López Osés (Logroño, 1928 - Logroño, 1999) was for decades one of the most popular photographers in La Rioja. The reason for this popularity was due to the reproduction of his photographs on posters and books linked to the promotion of tourism. Even today, and almost without realizing it, the collective imaginary of our region is made up of many of its snapshots.

López Osés made himself a photographer. His interest arose from his hobby to gradually acquire professional awareness. Antonio's first steps took place in the second half of the 1950s, after performing military service in the Air Force in Zaragoza. At that time, he took part in local competitions and obtained his first successes. Shortly after, in 1959, the Agrupación Fotográfica y Cinematográfica de La Rioja was created, being this the first forum where López Osés went to exchange experiences with other fans. The success achieved in the regional competitions will lead him to participate in the national ones. In them he will also collect different prizes, highlighting those obtained during 1971 in the competitions organised every month by the Ministry of Information and Tourism. Later, he won a second prize in the National Tourist Photography Contest Ortiz Echagüe (1983).

By then, Antonio López Osés had held several solo exhibitions. The first of these was held in 1963 in the Sala de la Caja de Provincial de Ahorros de Logroño, sharing the exhibition space with none other than the photographs of the German Otto Steinert (1915-1978), one of the great creators of the second half of the 20th century.

It was during the 1970s that Antonio established himself as a professional photographer. From then on, until his death, López Osés was considered and respected by Rioja's photographers, and in 1980 he was honoured with the exhibition of his work in the Sala de Cultura of the Dip. de La Rioja.

If Antonio López Osés has been recognized as the author of a type of artistic photography, based mainly on a kind of landscaping with a tourist appeal, to reduce his work to this type of images would be to distort it. Along with this professional work of commercial content, López Osés developed an exceptional activity as a reportage photographer. The issues he addressed from this perspective were very numerous. Everything that seemed pertinent to him was captured by his camera. This broad universe took shape in a series of themes that often occupied him. It can be said that what, in his opinion, characterized La Rioja, the Rioja and especially the people of Logroño, attracted him in a special way.

Antonio López Osés, like many other great photographers, accumulated throughout his life an enormous number of images. This acerbic work contains the work of its author and is a unique testimony of our most recent past. In 2006, the Institute of Studies of La Rioja contacted the photographer's heirs to acquire the collection that makes up his legacy, which culminated in 2007.

The López Osés archive is made up of more than forty thousand photographic documents that today form part of the Photographic Fund of the Publicly-owned Institute of Riojan Studies.

The images linked to the viticulture of this legacy were taken between the sixties and eighties of the twentieth century. They comprise around four thousand units and cover all the agricultural processes related to the vine and those that allow the production of wine. Given their age, these photos still show traditional methods that have practically disappeared from the fields and wineries of La Rioja. The documentary capacity of this material is completed by a magnificent mastery of the photographic techniques used for its production. Antonio López Osés knew how to develop an outstanding sense to look with his camera, to get the observer, whatever he may be, to integrate himself into the vital and sensual environment of the photographed.
