About us

The ‘Pedro Vivanco’ Aula de la Cultura del Vino at the University of La Rioja pays homage to the figure of the winemaker Pedro Vivanco Paracuellos (Logroño, 1946-2016).

The 'Pedro Vivanco' Aula de la Cultura del Vino is the result of an agreement signed between the Vivanco Foundation and the University of La Rioja in 2017.

The purpose of this agreement is to jointly promote training, dissemination activities, research and awareness in the field of wine culture.

The ‘Pedro Vivanco’ Aula de la Cultura del Vino at the University of La Rioja pays homage to the figure of the winemaker Pedro Vivanco Paracuellos (Logroño, 1946-2016). Trained at the School of Viticulture and Enology of Requena, he founded Bodegas Vivanco and the Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture - inaugurated in 2004 by His Majesty the King Don Juan Carlos - was recognized with the title of Riojano Ilustre (2005), the Medal of Gold to the Defense of the Wine Culture (2007) or the Gold Medal for Merit at Work (2014).

In its functioning dynamics, the Classroom assumes two principles: to seek alliances and complicities with companies, social agents and institutions to jointly carry out activities and leave the classrooms of the University encouraging their realization in other areas.

PEDRO VIVANCO

Passion for wine generation after generation

Pedro Vivanco Paracuellos (1946-2016), Winemaker and Founder of Bodegas Vivanco and the Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture , his work for the promotion and dissemination of wine culture earned him countless awards, such as the Gold Medal for the Defence of Wine Culture (2007), the Gold Medal for Work Merit (2014) or the National Gastronomy Award, special mention from the jury for his great work in the dissemination of Wine Culture (2016).

From a very young age, he became interested in the family winery business and showed a true vocation for the world of wine. At the age of 14, he was already travelling around Logroño by bicycle to distribute the family's wine. Later he dedicated himself to distributing wine throughout La Rioja and its surroundings until he decided, encouraged by his mother Felisa, to study at the Requena School of Oenology, where he acquired the necessary knowledge to be able to dedicate himself to his passion, becoming one of the most renowned winemakers in La Rioja.

While the winemaking business prospered, Pedro Vivanco's love of wine led him to become interested in everything related to wine: books, old tools for its production, corkscrews, artistic pieces... A concern for culture and art that was fed by the influence of his wife Angelica Saenz and her passion for painting.

In 1990, the Vivanco Family began to build the Vivanco Winery in Briones, with the firm idea in mind of the need to also create a Museum where all the pieces and artistic works collected over the years could be housed and made known, with the aim of sharing them. A place dedicated to research and study, but also to the dissemination of all kinds of cultural events in which wine has left its mark throughout its 8,000 year history.

The 'Pedro Vivanco' Aula de la Cultura del Vino pays homage to the figure of Pedro Vivanco, celebrates his legacy and seeks to convey that love for wine that he knew how to pass on. A way to give back to Pedro Vivanco a little of everything he has given to the world of wine.
